Joining The IAM

Membership of the IAM is usually open only to drivers and riders who have passed the IAM's Advanced Driving or Motorcycling Tests*

Exemptions

.As a serving or retired police officer, you are in a unique position to make a valuable contribution to road safety, not only in your official capacity, but by supporting the IAM's work, through membership.

Membership of the IAM is usually offered only to applicants who have succeeded in passing the IAM's Advanced Driving Test. However, since this test is based on the police system of car control, police officers holding one or more of the qualifications listed below are eligible for full membership of the IAM without further testing.

Join today - all you have to do is complete and return the application form and a copy of your certificate(s) to the IAM with your first year's membership fee of just £18.

IAM membership is open to both serving and retired police officers, though our special introductory membership rate is available only to holders of the following recognised qualifications.

  • Police Advanced Driving Certificate
  • Police Advanced Motorcycle Certificate
  • Police Standard Response Driving Certificate
  • Police Standard Response Motorcycle Certificate

Additional Exemptions:

If you are the holder of one or more of the qualifications listed below you are eligible to become a member of the IAM without the need to take the test.

As the holder of such a qualification, you are in a position to make a valuable contribution to road safety - not only by demonstrating skill and responsibility on the road but by supporting, through membership, the IAM's work of educating motorists and motorcyclists to drive and to ride better.

All you have to do is to complete and return the form

In addition, the special driving/riding qualification that you already hold enables you, should you wish, to get more directly involved with our important work by becoming an IAM group observer.

Qualifications gaining exemption:

  • CAR/LGV/MOTORCYCLE EXAMINER'S WARRANT (DDE)
  • CAR/LGV/MOTORCYCLE EXAMINER'S WARRANT (DSA)
  • FIRE/AMBULANCE SERVICE INSTRUCTOR'S CERTIFICATE
  • ARMED FORCES INSTRUCTOR'S CERTIFICATE
  • CLASS 1 ROLLS-ROYCE/BENTLEY CHAUFFEUR'S CERTIFICATE
  • GRADE A CARDINGTON SPECIAL DRIVING TEST CERTIFICATE

If you apply to take the Advanced Test, or are preparing for it through an IAM ‘Skill For Life’ programme or Fast Track, or if you are a DriveCheck participant, you will be enrolled as an IAM Associate for one year.

If during this period you pass the Test, you will be awarded membership status at no extra charge for the rest of that year, after which you will need to renew your membership annually.

The cost of Membership renewal is currently £18.00.

*In exceptional circumstances, membership is offered to drivers and riders with an equivalent or ‘special’ qualification (such as the Police Advanced Driving or Motorcycle Certificate), without the need to take the IAM Advanced Driving Test.
