Become an IAM group observer

Your first question might be 'what is an observer?

An 'observer' is a person who has already passed the Advanced Test and is prepared to help other people prepare for passing the test through what we call 'observed runs'. The observer advises and assists a driver/rider (known as an 'associate') in preparing for the IAM test by being a passenger in their car (following behind for bikes) and offering advice and support to the driver/rider to improve their driving/riding standard to the level you will need to reach to pass your test.

Your local IAM Group will welcome you if you want to become an observer and will provide guidance and assistance to ensure your current driving/riding is still up to the IAM Advanced Test Standard. Once confirmed, they will then give you lots of support, encouragement, and guidance to help you become a 'qualified observer' with the Group.

A 'qualified Observer' has met criteria laid down by the IAM to ensure there is a consistent standard across the country. Therefore a 'qualified observer' would be welcomed at any Group. All current/active observers must be current members of the IAM and their local Group.

By becoming a 'qualified observer', you will learn a lot more, not just about helping other drivers/riders reach the standard you have achieved, but through a greater understanding of the principles and application of advanced driving/riding techniques. This will also help you will improve your own standard of driving/riding.

There is another reason to become an observer - the satisfaction of one of  'your' associates passing the IAM Advanced Test and the part you played in that process.

So, don't delay, contact your local IAM Group NOW! by searching the Group Directory. Alternatively, look in the back of your latest copy of Advanced Driving for all the local Group Contact details.

How much does it cost?

You will be amazed at what value for money this will represent. All the Groups are run by volunteers so, apart from the annual Group Membership Fee (an average of somewhere between £5 and £15 per year depending on the Group), there are no other significant costs apart from a couple of books that give extremely valuable information (The principle book being 'Roadcraft - The Police Drivers Manual' at a cover price of £14.99 (or £15.99 for the DVD), but a local Group may well sell it cheaper to observers).

These titles are also available from the IAM e-Shop, either as a Book or DVD
