IAM Fleet has become a partner in SAFED (Safe and Fuel Efficient Driving) – a Government-sponsored training scheme available to company van drivers until March 2007.
Considering the ongoing bad press surrounding ‘white van man’, it is good to hear of an initiative aimed at providing these much maligned individuals with advanced driving skills and thereby improving both their own and the safety of others, whilst simultaneously saving millions of pounds in fuel costs. 
Said IAM Fleet training manager Simon Elstow, “With the effects of global warming now top of mind across the globe, we all have a duty to help reduce carbon emissions. The truck version of the same scheme resulted in an annual saving of 13,941,941 litres of fuel, which translated into £10,456,455, so we know SAFED can make a serious ‘green’ contribution. In short, it is a contemporary development we feel IAM Fleet should be involved in.”
A mixture of classroom and on-road tuition, SAFED for vans is a one day training course which is being offered free of charge to 7,500 drivers in England. Indeed, anybody who drives for an English-based company and holds a valid licence with Category B or C1 entitlement is invited to apply to IAM Fleet for a place by calling Rosie Flynn on 0208 996 9750.
