IAM condemns "selfish" 172mph Porsche driver
The IAM today (24 September 2007) condemned as "selfish" the Porsche driver convicted for driving at 172mph. Peter Rodger, IAM Chief Examiner, said: "No other person on the road – driver, cyclist or pedestrian - will be expecting a car travelling at that speed and the consequences could have been catastrophic. "A full-blooded emergency stop at that speed would take something approaching a third of a mile, with the speed of the car still very high well into that distance. "This kind of selfish driving compromises other drivers and vulnerable road users. Super cars need super drivers with all the additional training and responsiblity that goes with it - I am glad that this case resulted in a custodial sentence – driving at high speeds is an activity which should be restricted to those in the emergency services who have been very carefully and extensively trained – and only when there is real need."
