The IAM is keen to support any initiative that helps train young drivers and thereby reduces the related accident rates. So, IAM Fleet was delighted to be approached by a group of graduates working for Shell in Aberdeen, who wanted to arrange their own bespoke driver training programme.
The youngsters had even arranged their own funding – enough to put 60 of them through the initial classroom element that comprised four seminars of 15 trainees per class. 40 of these then progressed to practical on-road training, where four graduates per day were instructed on a 2 to 1 basis for 10 days, and for which Enterprise Rent-A-Car kindly loaned the car.
Said, IAM Fleet’s National Business Manager Derek Camp, "This was an extremely rewarding project and we would warmly welcome more of this type of work. As it was the youngsters’ own initiative, they were very keen on every aspect of the project and eager to learn all they could from the opportunity. If there was a way of providing all new drivers with this type of experience, I’ve no doubt that accident rates for this category would drop significantly."
