Who are the Durham Group of Advanced Motorists?

The Durham Group of Advanced Motorists was formed in 1984, is a registered charity and is affiliated to the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM). It is run on a voluntary basis, and neither Committee members nor Observers receive any money for the time and effort that they provide to the group.

How can the Durham Group of Advanced Motorists help me?

The provision of one to one advice and guidance on improving your car driving and to prepare for the IAM test. The advice is provided by an 'observer' on payment of your 'Skill for Life' fee. The Observer is someone who has passed the Advanced Test, has been approved by the Committee and the Group Training Officer. The observers are unpaid volunteers, who are keen to share their skills and knowledge to help you imporve your driving skills and to pass the Advanced Driving Test.

How does the Durham Group Operate?

What is required of me?

The Group holds monthly meetings, on the third Tuesday of each month, (except August and December) at 7.30pm in the Durham City Companions Club, Ainsley Terrace, Durham City, DH1 4BG (behind the County Hospital).

The Meetings include: Speakers, videos, quizzes, visits, treasure hunts etc. of interest to motorists.

What do I get from my IAM Membership?

Your Skill for Life application fee includes

Associate membership of the IAM,

Associate membership of the Durham Group,

The IAM book "Advanced Driving - The Essential Guide"

"Advanced Driving" the IAMs tri-annual Members magazine

the same benefit opportunities as a Full Member.

An initial assessment & all Test preparation work (undertaken by your local IAM Group)

Entry into the Advanced Driving Test

IAM Associate status, with an automatic upgrade to full Membership of the IAM (upon passing the Advanced Driving Test within 12 months).

Access to the "Members" area of this website (with details of Members' Events, Membership Services and Special Offers).

What do I get from Membership with the Durham Group?

‘Group membership’ is with the Durham Group of Advanced Motorists only and not with the IAM.The group full membership fee, for subsequent years, for people who have passed the Advanced Test, is £10 per calendar year.

As a Group member you are entitled to attend all meetings and events organised by the group and are free to bring friends who may be interested.Monthly meetings are held at the Durham City Companions Club, 10 Ainsley Street, Durham, DH1 4BG, at 7.30pm on the third Tuesday of each month, except June (Driving Skills Night/Treasure Hunt), August (summer hols) and December (Christmas hols).
