Cut accident rates and CO2 emissions with safer, smarter driving
The IAM Motoring Trust welcomes the DfT Climate Change initiative, “Act On CO2” (published March 2007) as sound advice that is more useful than the usual call to use often non-existent public transport, or threats of penalties.
“Motorists want to play their part in reducing carbon emissions. They know that driving less is part of the solution but they also know that giving up car use is not a realistic option,” says Tim Shallcross, Head of Technical Policy and Advice for the IAM Trust.”
The IAM Trust is keen on the “Smarter Driving” part of the campaign. “Driving style has the biggest impact on fuel consumption. If we all take more care of our cars and more care in the way we drive, both accident rates and CO2 emissions will fall, while still making our essential journeys.”
‘Eco’ driving courses in Holland recently achieved fuel savings of up to 30 per cent and 6000+ fleet drivers who were trained under the Safe and Fuel Efficient Driver (SAFED) programme (http://www.safed.org.uk/) saved 14 million litres of fuel between 2001 and 2004 (approximately £10 million).
