'Certified' biofuels are a green way forward

The long-term success of biofuels will make a vital contribution sustainable motoring. The IAM Motoring Trust supports the government’s Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO) approach but there must be assurances that food supplies and the environment in developing countries will not suffer.

“The IAM Trust is working with the Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership on biofuel certification, which will examine overall ‘seed to wheel’ impacts, as well as the carbon footprint from biofuel production and transport.Motorists need to know that the fuel they buy at the pump has been sustainably produced, says Neil Greig, Director IAM Motoring Trust, “we encourage all fuel suppliers to sign up to the certification process and to display their compliance on the forecourt”.

In the long term, biofuels should come from wood, organic waste and the off cuts of agriculture rather than the crops themselves. It makes no sense if oil production for vehicles in the developed world causes food shortages.UK drivers can positively influence the development of this important industry, only if they are fully aware of which fuels have been produced in an environmentally sustainable way.
