About Us

IAM RoadSmart (previously IAM – the Institute of Advanced Motorists) is the UK’s largest independent road safety charity and has a mission to make better drivers and riders in order to improve road safety, inspire confidence and make driving and riding enjoyable. Best known for the advanced test IAM RoadSmart has more than 92,000 members and is supported by a local volunteer network of 200 groups in the UK and Ireland. Our aim is to influence and lead the debate on reducing the numbers of people killed and seriously injured on our roads through original research and insights on human factors and increasing levels of technology. In 2016 we celebrated our 60th year with a rebrand, a new look website and by relocating to brand new offices in Welwyn Garden City.

The RAC Foundation is a transport policy and research organisation which explores the economic, mobility, safety and environmental issues relating to roads and their users. The Foundation publishes independent and authoritative research with which it promotes informed debate and advocates policy in the interest of the responsible motorist.  In 2016 the Foundation published more than a dozen pieces of research.

More details of the work carried out by the Foundation can be found in the publications section.  In 1999 RAC Motoring Services was sold by its owners; the individual members of the Royal Automobile Club. It was these members who granted the Foundation a generous legacy to guarantee its long-term future.  Today the Foundation is a registered charity and independent of both RAC Motoring Services and the Royal Automobile Club.
